Risk Factor of Esophageal Cancer

Risk factor - A risk factor is a variable associated with an increased risk of disease or infection but risk factors are not necessarily causal. For example, being young cannot be said to cause measles, but young people are more at risk as they are less likely to have developed immunity during a previous epidemic.

Esophageal cancer - Esophageal cancer is malignancy of the esophagus. There are various subtypes.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer - Hereditary nonpolypsis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is characterized by an increased risk of colon cancer and other cancers such as endometrium, ovary, stomach, small intestine, hepatobiliary tract, upper urinary tract, brain, and skin. Individuals with HNPCC have about a 80% lifetime risk for colon cancer.

Abortion-breast cancer (ABC) hypothesis - The controversial abortion-breast cancer (ABC) hypothesis posits a causal relationship between having an induced abortion and a higher risk of developing breast cancer in the future. An increased level of estrogen in early pregnancy helps to initiate cellular differentiation (growth) in the breast in preparation for lactation.
